    2008 YODEX Review: Varied competitions, Vast creations

    Monday, May 26, 2008 The 27th Young Designers’ Exhibition 2008, recognized by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) as the largest show of student creations, recently ended Sunday May 18. It was held at the Taipei World Trade Center. Improvements and expansions were seen with 107 academical and industrial units. Different design competitions participated and showcased their products and also received awards. It’s no doubt that companies related to design and cultural industries want to discover creative talents from academical units in this exhibition.     Hot dog eating champion retains title after tiebreaker

    Friday, July 4, 2008 For the second year in a row, American competitive eater Joey Chestnut defeated his Japanese rival Takeru Kobayashi at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York City, after a tie forced a five hot dog eat-off to be held. After ten minutes of hot dog eating, two shorter than in previous years, Chestnut and Kobayashi were tied at 59 frankfurters. But after the rare tiebreaker, 24-year-old Chestnut emerged as the winner, claiming a $10,000 prize and a mustard-yellow belt. “It was crazy,” he said. “I’m just a normal guy eating hot dogs on the Fourth.     Google launches Google Spreadsheets

    Tuesday, June 6, 2006 Google has launched an online spreadsheet site, in a private beta. The site will allow spreadsheets to be shared between up to 10 users, which is aimed to be useful to teams and small businesses. “Many people already organise information into spreadsheets. Where they are struggling is to share it” said the product manager, Jonathan Rochelle. Google recently bought the online word-processor Writely, launched a calendar product, as well as a desktop search tool. Many see this as them straying into Microsoft‘s markets.     PayPal receives banking licence

    Tuesday, May 15, 2007 The online payment service PayPal has received a banking licence in Luxembourg, promoting it to the status of a bank. As a consequence PayPal will move their headquarters to Luxembourg. Since 2004 PayPal had the status of an Electronic Money Issuer supervised by the U.K. Financial Services Authority. Having an official bank status opens new prospects for the company: “This will allow us to actively scout retailers in different European countries.
