Zeus botnet trojan horse is back

Trusteer, a web security company, reports that a trojan horse virus called Zeus can steal online banking details from infected computers. The virus has infected one out of every 3,000 computers of the 5,500,000 million which the company monitors in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The trojan can infect users of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer on Microsoft Windows, and steals login information by recording keystrokes when the machine connects to certain websites, usually banks or other financial institutions. The stolen data is transmitted to a remote server and sold to cyber-criminals. “We expect this new version of Zeus to significantly increase fraud losses, since nearly 30% of Internet users bank online with Firefox and the infection is growing faster than we have ever seen before,” said Amit Klein, chief technology officer at Trusteer, to BBC.

The trojan has also affected Wikinews users, including Brian McNeil, who is the founder of Wikinewsie, a restricted-access wiki used to collaborate on sensitive news reports. McNeil reported on his userspace: “On Saturday [April] 17, a Windows-based PC in the house issued a cry for help, the Avira package running on the system had just detected a piece of malware; full scans indicated several known pieces of malware and numerous hidden files. Additional scans revealed that all but one of the USB memory sticks and portable hard drives in the house were infected with something. The Zeus botnet, as it turned out.” E-mail accounts for accredited reporters have also been affected.

Oral Roberts University accountant claims he was ordered to “cook the books”

Wednesday, November 21, 2007

A former accountant for Oral Roberts University (ORU) has filed a lawsuit against ORU and its Board of Regents claiming he was told by Richard Roberts and his wife Lindsay to “cook the books”, hiding financial wrongdoing from authorities and the public. Trent Huddleston, the accountant, has filed suit against the school and the Robertses claiming he “was improperly and unlawfully directed to perform functions and duties in violation of state and federal law in an effort by the defendants to ‘cook the books’ and hide from the appropriate authorities and the public the continued wrongdoing, improper and illegal conduct of the defendants, and in particular, of Richard and Lindsay Roberts.”

Huddleston said that nearly $123,000 in remodeling fees for their home was paid by Oral Roberts University and Oral Roberts Ministries. In addition the lawsuit alleges $4,000 was spent on a pool table for the Robertses. Previously the Roberts were accused of illegal political and financial wrongdoing, which forced the president to step down from his positison.

Last week at a meeting called by Oral Roberts, founder of the University and former faith healer, a majority of the faculty voted against allowing Richard to serve as president.

An ORU spokesman declined to comment on latest lawsuit and the faculty meeting.

In other news, Tulsa World released emails between Richard and his political adviser and sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees. The emails given by an anonymous source, show the two plan to gain political influence using ORU students.

Yemen: Former president Ali Abdullah Saleh killed in Sana’a by Houthi militants

Wednesday, December 6, 2017

On Monday, former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed in a shooting attack by Houthi rebels near the capital city Sana’a, Houthi-controlled Interior Ministry in Sana’a confirmed. A statement issued by the interior ministry read, “The militias of treason are finished and their leader has been killed”.

Recently, a battle broke out in Sana’a between supporters of Saleh and Houthi rebels. For a long time, these two parties fought side by side against the international Saudi-led coalition in the civil war ongoing since early 2015. Saleh’s home in Sana’a had been under siege for about 48 hours before Saleh’s death. The home in Sana’a was bombed. Salah was reportedly leaving for his hometown Sanhan. According to Houthi officials, he was followed by Houthi fighters in 20 armoured vehicles who surrounded and then killed him together with some of his senior aids at a checkpoint south of the capital.

75-year-old Saleh announced two days before his death he was no longer aligned with the Houthis. He declared himself willing to “turn the page” with regards to the relationships with the Saudi-led international coalition, if they would stop the attacks on Yemen. Moreover, he said “The country had to be saved from the madness of the Houthi group”. This statement came on the fourth day of the ongoing battle in Sana’a between Saleh’s own supporters and insurgent Houthi fighters.
